National Honor Society

The Albertus Magnus Chapter of the National Honor Society has existed since Bishop Miege opened its doors.  This nationally recognized organization operates under the auspices of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.  The national website is www.nhs.us.

Membership in NHS is open to all-eligible juniors and seniors in the fall of each academic year.  Eligibility to be invited to consider NHS membership is determined by a student's cumulative GPA which must be 3.4 or higher.  If an eligible student wishes to seek membership, he/she completes an application, including two references, which presents the student's leadership, service, and character.  All four qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character are considered equally. A faculty committee, selected each fall by the potential members, reviews each student's application.  An induction ceremony and reception are held in November to welcome all new members.

The activities of the chapter include a fall and spring service project as well as weekly program of tutoring and recycling.  All members are requires to participate in these activities as planned by the elected officers.  Some examples of the fall projects are fall yard clean-up for seniors and shut ins in the neighborhoods around Miege (2001), designing and painting a 110' mural to brighten the pre-school playground at St. Pius X Grade School (2002), and working at the Ronald McDonald House near KU Medical Center (2003). The Spring Project is to help set-up for the Miege Auction in April.

Mrs. Clara George is the current NHS Advisor. She can be contacted at 913-262-2701 ext. 518 or georgec@bishopmiege.com.
