STAGRoboticsFinishes Well Again
From TheMiegian, Issue 7, by Features Editor Zach Murdock
STAGRobotics placed third inthe Greater Kansas City Regionalat Hale Arena, Feb. 26-28, in two days of intense matches at one ofthe largest regional competitions in the nation. This third annual KansasCity Regional drew 61 teams from states around the Midwest includingMissouri, Kansas,Wisconsin, Illinois,Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota.
The teams, who hadshipped their robots to the arena in crates, arrived early to greet judges andother teams on Feb. 26, and to run practice rounds all day
.
Friday, teams beganqualifying rounds that lasted all day and into Saturdaymorning. STAGRobotics started thequalifying poorly, allied with an empty trailer that sat motionless during thematch. But throughout the day, Miege’sEdgar proved to be one of the mosteffective robots in the Regional and made a good run at a high seed forchampionship matches. Unfortunately, the team struggled with poor allianceslate in the qualifying rounds, but pulled through for a 16th seedfinish in the overall standings.
After allqualifying matches finished, the top eight ranked teams drafted their alliancesfor the championship rounds. Fourth seed, RaileRobotics, from Newton High Schoolin Newton, Kansas, drafted STAGRobotics and Swart-Dogs from Cedar Falls High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa, first and second respectively.
This alliance would goon to play seven more matches in the championship rounds, winning theirquarterfinal and advancing to the semis. The alliance put together a very goodmatch against powerhouse alliance, #1806 SWAT--#1208 Metool Brigade--# 931Perpetual Chaos, but lost in their third game in a best-of-three-advancesbracket. Though the alliance did well as a whole, and STAGRobotics continued todominate offensively, penalties ultimately cost the alliance their bid to thefinals.
Though the teamdoes not advance to the national tournament in Atlanta, Georgia, it did finish third at one of the nation’s largestregional competitions. Drivers Kevin Jancewski, Shawn Herrington, and JoshWancura proved that Edgar was a capable robot at this year’s competition.
