May 19, 2017

Greetings, Miege Community! Our final Friday for the academic year provides a wealth of emotions and memories. First and foremost, THANK YOU for sharing your precious gifts with us by sending your child to Bishop Miege. The joyful perspective of a summer break is often countered with saying farewell to people which we have grown quite attached. The Bishop Miege Faculty and Staff pray a for safe and relaxing break for you and your family. Peace!

Congratulations to 2017 Graduate Will Grier for winning the KS 4A Tennis Championship this past weekend.

Congratulations to our Miege Forensics team for placing 8th in the KS 4A State Tournament. Jack Emory & Aidan Gray placed 1st in Improvised Duet Acting, Olivia Demo placed 4th in Extemp, Deresha Billups-Campbell placed 5th in Poetry, & Ruby Rios placed 6th in Oration.

Good luck to our teams competing in regional and state competition. Junior Joseph Cardarella will compete in the State Golf Championships on Monday in Wamego, the Girls' Swimming & Diving team is competing today and Saturday in Topeka at the State Swimming Championships, the Girls' Soccer competes in the KS Quarterfinals on Monday, Boys Baseball team will compete in Salina at the State tournament on Thursday, and the Girls' and Boys' Track squads are competing in regional track in Baldwin. #gostagsgo

Academic Update
Please note our final exam schedule for next week. Your student should have an action plan for finishing up the semester on a strong note. Academic questions can be directed to your child's teachers. Please note that we will shut down PowerSchool on Monday morning while finals are taking place. Once all the semester grades are exported and stored, Bishop Miege will send an alert for families to review final grades.

Campus Ministry Update
*The final 7:15 Mass for the year will be Tuesday, 5/23, in the St. Angela Chapel. All are welcome

IMPORTANT CHRISTIAN SERVICE HOUR UPDATE
Currently, students’ spring semester Service Project accounts for 10% of their fourth quarter Theology grade. There are three components of our annual service requirement: Completed verification forms for the required number of hours, a final reflection paper, and a class presentation. However, there is no further accountability in place to ensure that students complete their required number of service hours before the next school year begins.

As a result of this dilemma, it is not uncommon for a significant number of students to have a minimal number of service hours. The expectation is that a student document at least 55 hours by the beginning of his or her senior year.

Therefore, beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, students returning to Miege this fall, who have not fulfilled their service requirement, will not be able to attend classes until they have completed the appropriate number of service hours:

Class of 2020 – 10 hours with at least 5 hours of Corporal Works of Mercy(CWM)
Class of 2019 – 30 hours with at least 15 hours of CWM
Class of 2018 – 55 hours with at least 27.5 hours of CWM

For criteria for Corporal Works of Mercy, click on the link to the website: Bishop Miege Service Hour Requirements

Athletics Office Update

Annual Sports Physical Clinic is scheduled for Thursday, June 1, from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. The cost is $20. Parents are encouraged to come with their athlete(s). The Sports Physical Packet can be downloaded from our school’s website: 2017-18 Medical Forms. Please have all pages (except the sports physical) completed prior to the clinic. Doors will open at 5:15, enter and exit through the south doors. IMPACT testing will also be offered for all athletes during the clinic. Feel free to call Maura Peterson RN, school nurse, if any questions.

Greetings, Miege Community! Graduation Week is drawing to a close. The Senior Retreat on Thursday was so meaningful and spoke to closure for the Class of 2017 to the high school years. The Journey takes on new meaning after Saturday's Senior Breakfast, Baccalaureate, and Graduation Ceremony. The lessons learned in the classrooms, halls, and fields are numerous; however, Jesus Christ's message is amplified, "Love One Another as I Have Loved You." Congratulations and Godspeed, Class of 2017!

DID YOU KNOW: Seven young men from the graduating class have indicated the next step in their journey is joining a branch of the U.S. Military. We extend our gratitude and prayers to these members in the next phase of their lives.

Students have four remaining days of classes prior to the start of final exams on Monday, May 22nd. Greetings, Miege Community! Today marks our final All School Mass with the Class of 2017. It's often said, "The days are slow, but the years fly by!" Such a true statement with our senior class. The indelible mark which these students leave at Bishop Miege will not only identify the high standards and achievements attained over these four years, but we also remember the hearts of these young women and men. On May 13th Miege will send these students forward to journey on their new paths. Let them remember their relationships with our Savior, Jesus Christ, and that the Son is always with us!
"Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” -John 6: 57-58

DID YOU KNOW: The Music Department earned 48 medals this past weekend at the KSHSAA State Music competition. Our students earned 1 ratings (Outstanding) in six individual and three ensemble performances. Congratulations to Mrs. Christie, Mrs. Nesbihal, and our students for an outstanding season. Specific results can be found on the Bishop Miege Facebook Page.

Academic Update
The final weeks of May can be blasted with activities, assignments, and STRESS! Please visit with your student to make sure an action plan has been created to focus on an outstanding finish to the school year. Allocate some time to review PowerSchool and schedule specific times to coordinate studies. By verbalizing these actions and even writing down the To-Do list of how academics will be addressed, the anxiety of schoolwork can be decreased. Bishop Miege encourages communication between students, teachers, and parents to identify targeted goals these remaining weeks.

Family Discussions

This past month has brought quite a bit of news about a television series on Netflix, 13 Reasons Why. The show is based on social concerns for teenagers such as bullying, suicide, drug use and more. The provided link ArchKCK link for Television Series is a letter from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas which provides an overview of our concerns with this production. Please take time to review it in order to have discussions with your child. In addition, more resources can be provided via our Guidance Department for specific topics. Mr. Beek, Mrs. Schmidtberger, and Mr. Meara can provide additional contacts for families seeking support with these issues.

Greetings, Miege Community! We celebrate the Second Friday of the Easter Season and share the Gospel reading from John, Chapter 6 today. How incredible the story of Jesus using 5 fish and 2 loaves to feed over 5000 people. The astonishing stories like this affirm that we believe in Jesus Christ to nourish our bodies and souls. Let the Easter celebration of the great glory to the Son of God, Our Savior Jesus Christ, continue through Pentecost and beyond!

Since our last correspondence, so much has happened for our Miege community. We celebrate the completion of Kairos 53 and the wonderful retreat opportunities in which some of our seniors participated this year. Congratulations to our National Qualifiers in Forensics who will travel to Birmingham, Alabama. Mrs. Reynolds leads seniors Olivia Demo, Abby Byrd, Robert Wasinger, and Ryan Wendling this June to compete against High Schoolers from across the United States. Also, congratulations to the following juniors who will participate in Girls State at Kansas University in June: Miranda Collins, Mary Jane Gittemeier, Marian Haik, Kaiya Hilderbrand, Emily Matos, and Aurora Rodriguez. The Theatre Department is applauded for their two nights of One Acts. Finally, Miege wishes the best to our music performers traveling to Chapman HS this weekend for Kansas State Music competition. Godspeed to all our participants!

DID YOU KNOW: One of the changes for the 2017-18 school year will be a later start time. Following daily Mass celebrated from 8 - 8:30 a.m., first period will begin at 8:40 a.m. and we will have a 3:25 p.m. dismissal. The National Sleep Foundation provides research that describes the importance of sleep for the teenage brain. Along with the Spiritual nourishment of Mass, please familiarize yourself in the importance of sleep for our students.

Junior/Senior Girls
As previously e-mailed, all Junior and Senior girls will be required to wear a solid khaki or navy skort beginning in the fall of 2017. The skorts may be purchased through the STAG Shop. Due to the difference in sizing and fit from the plaid skirts, it is suggested that students come in to the Stag Shop to try on the skorts. Skorts should be of a modest fit and length. Just a reminder, skirts and skorts will be checked at Orientation for appropriate style, fit and length. Orders must be placed by May 15 in order to be picked up in the fall. Please do not wait until fall to purchase a skort as there will be a limited amount of inventory.

Uniform Orders - All Students
The last day to order uniform skirts, skorts and shirts is May 15. For your convenience orders may be placed ONLINE. If your son or daughter is ordering pants they need to be purchased through the Lands End website at: www.landsend.com/school (Lands End School# 900169202). Again, you must order by May 15th to ensure students will have their uniforms prior to Orientation days on August 16th & 17th.

April 7, 2017

Greetings, Miege Community! This Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent is a template of finding calm in a "storm" of activities. Thank you to Archbishop Naumann for leading our All School Adoration service on Thursday. The students, faculty and staff utilized this reverent time to pray and reflect on the heavy burdens in our hearts, then opening up to allow Jesus Christ to be our answer. The humility of our community coming forward, kneeling and taking hold of the fabric flowing from the altar where the Monstrance is displayed, and nurturing their relationships with Christ is heartfelt. Palm Sunday leads us to Holy Week and the incredible witness to remind us of the ransom which Jesus paid. Peace!

Please pray for our students and families as we remember: ACT testing on Saturday morning, Open House for the Class of 2021 on Saturday afternoon, Saturday's KSHSAA Regional Music competition, and Saturday Night's Prom for our seniors and juniors, and the multitude of activities and athletics happening daily. Our kids are awesome!

DID YOU KNOW: Bishop Miege uses the e-mail, prayers@bishopmiege.com, for our community to offer prayers and intentions to share with Bishop Miege. We then record the prayer requests that are offered at Masses in the Book of Intentions displayed in the Chapel and at All School Liturgies.

Academic Update

A huge thank you to the sophomore and junior classes for participating in this spring's Kansas Assessments. The juniors tested in the Science Assessment, and the sophomores are near completion of English Language Arts and the Mathematics assessments for grade 10. A special thank you also to the faculty members that must accommodate their teaching routine to proctor these assessments. Although we hit a challenge in the KITE portal this week, the students' cooperative attitudes are always appreciated. Feedback from the testing will come at a later date this year.

March 31, 2017

Greetings, Miege Community!
The Lenten Season continues as we reach this 4th Friday of Lent. Today's Gospel of Matthew follows Jesus into the Galilee, and we continue to hear the message of the wicked who scorned our Savior, Jesus Christ. It was in Christ's humility that we have been saved by God's grace and forgiveness of our sins. Thank you to the area priests that joined our community on Wednesday to offer the Lenten Sacrament of Reconciliation for all our classes. Students were able to pray, meditate, and talk with a priest about the beauty of this sacrament. We ask that you continue to pray for our students as they take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen their relationships with Jesus Christ. Peace!

The juniors have nearly finished the science assessment while the sophomores are in the middle of the English Language Arts(ELA) assessment. From the Athletic Department:
While we were practicing and competing inside during winter sports, the weather outside was delightful, but now that we have moved back outside with the spring sports, we are once again experiencing more extreme weather! We want everyone to know that we take the safety of our student-athletes very seriously. We do have weather apps that alert our coaches concerning incoming weather such as rain and lightning. We will stop all practices and/or competitions if we have lightning in the area, moving everyone inside to safety.

Unfortunately, we also have to postpone or cancel games and/or practices due to the weather creating unsafe playing conditions. If this is the case, we do our best to get the word out and publicize the changes as quickly as possible. We have Twitter and Facebook posts from the school, and the changes are tied to the Bishop Miege App, which in turn will broadcast event changes. The coaches should be sending word to the parents of event changes as well. We do our best to send notifications as early as possible to keep parents and fans informed. Thank you for understanding that sometimes we are not sure until later in the school day.

Development Office Update

March 24, 2017

Greetings, Miege Community!
Today marks the third Friday of the third full week of Lent. Yesterday's prayer shared that we marked the halfway point of Lent. Today's End of Day prayer will mark the 1st Station of the Cross which means there are 13 more school days prior to Holy Thursday. The acceleration of time is amazing, and it should force us to continue to focus on priorities. At the top of the list is our relationship with Jesus Christ. Today's Gospel reading from the Book of Mark speaks of Jesus telling us we should love our neighbor as much as we love God. That's a pretty major request because some neighbors are just plain tough to love. However, if we place our challenges on the Lord's altar, it makes loving easier. Have a blissful weekend, and God bless our students, families, faculty & staff.

A huge THANK YOU to Archbishop Emeritus Keleher for celebrating our activity Mass this past Tuesday. Miege is truly blessed to have this wonderful opportunity for Archbishop to share his time with our students.

Congratulations on the state championships won by the Girls' and Boys' Basketball teams on the weekend of March 11th. Miege recognized the two teams plus our Cheer & Pom squad at an assembly Thursday morning. #gostagsgo

DID YOU KNOW: Today marks Miege proctoring the spring Cambridge ACT exam. This college readiness test is given to juniors, sophomores, and freshmen as a simulated experience of the real ACT. The feedback from this test will be shared with teachers in order to provide specific lesson plans to strengthen students' academic skills. Remember, higher scores could result in more scholarship dollars and college opportunities. Results for each student's Cambridge score will be shared with families in the next few weeks.

March 10, 2017

Greetings, Miege Community! As we finish the first full week of Lent, today's scripture speaks to us about not only reconciliation with God, but also the need for us to be at peace with our fellow man. In today's world of people lashing out at one another and treating each other poorly, we need only to look at the Cross. Jesus endured the most painful and irreverent treatment by the leaders and people of his time, and He also modeled for us exactly what grace and mercy look like. Please have a restful, reflecting, and re-energizing spring break. The Holy Spirit is all around, so let that Spirit fill our hearts.

Please keep the students and adults of the three mission trips in your prayers. Our groups are heading to West Virginia, Chicago, and right here in Kansas City. May our Stags on the mission trips see the face of Christ in all who they encounter and be touched by the grace of serving others.

Good luck to Bishop Miege Girls and Boys Basketball in Salina tonight and tomorrow. Both teams are set to play in Friday night semifinal games. The early release from classes today is intended for our students and fans to support our Stags. Also, thanks to the Cube for offering internet broadcasts. #gostagsgo

Academic Update
Today marks the end of the third quarter. This time of year always reminds us of how quickly the weeks can fly. Teachers will be posting grades for Q3 through Wednesday, March 22, and a fresh start with fourth quarter enables new action plans to be developed for a strong finish. Please remember our school's MASH program for academic support. Any student receiving below a C in the third quarter should access the resources Miege offers to increase achievement.

Re-Registration with InfoSnap
